jewelry

We continue to feature Turkoman and Kazakh style jewelry, with many charming wearable and collectible works in silver. Particularly noteworthy examples include the very fine Bukharan earrings in paisley shape, the Mughal-period enamel box, the very old and rare Bukharan niello-silver pendants and tassels, and smaller ink and wax containers. There are several exceptional /bazuband/, silver talismanic ornaments with inscribed decoration that were tied to the forearm. An unusual group of medals with bold horse-head designs were presented to prize-winning Afghan horsemen for their skill on the /buzkashi/-fields. (We purchased every one of these that we could find back in the 1970s.) A small group very rare Turkoman weaving and embroidery accessories are grouped in one frame; they include a thimble, silver spindle whorl, and gilded-silver spindle weight. The stylized bow ornament, a half-circle set with carnelian and surrounded by silver chain drops, is another of the rarest types of Turkoman jewelry. These bow-ornaments were made especially to be worn by young male children. They protected the child’s health and assisted him to grow up to be a strong and courageous warrior. For an introduction to Turkoman culture and the Turkoman jewelry tradition, view the articles: Women’s Magic and Turkoman Jewelry in the articles on art section of this website.
